ABSTRACT
The seed part of plant Tephrosia purpurea Linn. were selected for present study. Plant Tephrosia purpurea Linn. was collected during June 2007 from rural area of Shirur, The fresh seed were washed with tap water 3 to 4 time, cleaned and shade dried for several day,  then crushed in  coarse powered (200g) with the help of electric grinder and extracted with benzene, ethanol by using soxhlet apparatus successively with 600ml of each of solvent and aqueous extract by cold maceration.
The solvents are removed under reduced pressure. Extracts were concentrated to dryness at controlled temperature (40 - 50oC).
All the extracts  were  evaluated  for  anthelmintic  activity.  The  benzene,  ethanol, aqueous  extracts  of  Tephrosia purpurea exhibited  anthelmintic  activity  in  dose-dependent  manner  giving  shortest  time  of  paralysis  and  death  with  100mg/ml  concentration  for  Pheretima posthuma.  The benzene and  ethanolic  extracts  were  comparable  in  activity  and  took  less  time  for  paralysis  and  death  compared  with  standard  drug.  While aqueous extract shown significant activity. Further, it will be interesting to isolate the possible phytoconstituents, which may be responsible for the anthelmintic activity.
