ABSTRACT

Typhoid fever (TF) is an acute systemic infection caused by Salmonella Typhi, Salmonella Para Typhi A and Salmonella Para Typhi B. It is transmitted by the fecal oral route mainly via contaminated food and water. The developing countries have high rate of morbidity and mortality due to Typhoid fever, epidemics take place in developed world also. There are increased incidences of multi drug resistant in S. typhi strains that has further complicated its management and only a few antibiotics are now effective in treatment of typhoid. We report that the aqueous extracts of fruit peel Citrus sinensis (L.) confer anti typhoid activity against Salmonella Typhi, Salmonella Para Typhi A and Salmonella Para Typhi B respectively on comparison with ciprofloxacin.

ABSTRACT

The chemistry of metal complexes with tailor made Schiff base ligands and their applications, have aroused considerable interest mainly because of preparative accessibility, diverse reactivity and structural variability. Complexes of Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) with the Schiff base ligands derived from 5-bromosalicylaldehyde with 2-amino-4-chlorophenol (BACP) and  2-amino-4-methylbenzothiazole (BABT) have been synthesized and characterized by various physicochemical methods viz. micro-analytical data, UV-VIS, FT-IR, ESR spectroscopy, molar conductance, FAB-mass and magnetic susceptibility measurements. FAB-mass data show degradation pattern of the complexes. All the complexes are colored and stable towards air and moisture. The complexes exhibit coordination number to be 4 and 6. The Schiff base and metal complexes show a good activity against the bacteria; B. subtilis, E. coli and S. aureus and fungi A. niger, A. flavus and C. albicans. The antimicrobial results also indicate that the metal complexes are better antimicrobial agents as compared to the Schiff bases.
