ABSTRACT

Development of anthelmintic resistance and high cost of conventional anthelmintic drugs led to the evaluation of medicinal plants has an alternative source of anthelmintics. In the current study, in-vitro experiments were conducted to evaluate the possible anthelmintic effects of crude alcoholic and water extracts of leaves of Gmelina arborea Roxb using Pheretima Posthuma and Ascardia galli. Three concentrations (25, 50 and 100 mg/ml) of each extracts were studied in the activity, which involved the determination of time of paralysis and time of death of the worm. Piperazine citrate in same concentration as that of extract was included as standard reference and normal saline as control. The result of the present study indicated that both alcoholic and aqueous extract significantly demonstrated paralysis and also caused death of worms especially at higher concentration of 100 mg/ml, as compared to standard reference Piperazine citrate.

Key words: Gmelina arborea, anthelmintic, earthworm, paralysis, Piperazine citrate
