ABSTRACT

Typhoid fever (TF) is an acute systemic infection caused by Salmonella Typhi, Salmonella Para Typhi A and Salmonella Para Typhi B. It is transmitted by the fecal oral route mainly via contaminated food and water. The developing countries have high rate of morbidity and mortality due to Typhoid fever, epidemics take place in developed world also. There are increased incidences of multi drug resistant in S. typhi strains that has further complicated its management and only a few antibiotics are now effective in treatment of typhoid. We report that the aqueous extracts of fruit peel Citrus sinensis (L.) confer anti typhoid activity against Salmonella Typhi, Salmonella Para Typhi A and Salmonella Para Typhi B respectively on comparison with ciprofloxacin.

ABSTRACT

The anticonvulsant activity of chloroform extract of Nelumbo nucifera was investigated by studying the effects on seizures induced by maximal electroshock (MES) and pentylentetrazole (PTZ) methods in mice. Nelumbo nucifera with dose of 120 mg/kg show significant activity reduced the tonic extensor convulsion induced by maximum electroshock-induced convulsions. It significantly increased the onset of convulsion in seizure induced by pentylenetetrazole (80 mg/kg i.p.). Furthermore, Nelumbo nucifera has no influence on spontaneous loco motor activity in mice. The data obtained suggest that Nelumbo nucifera have mild to moderate anticonvulsant property and may be due to involvement of GABA. Further experimentation is needed to explore the mechanism of this herb as anticonvulsant agent. With this regards herbal anticonvulsants that are successfully exploited are reviewed as under.
